Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged US President Donald Trump to continue seeking a diplomatic solution to tensions with Iran as a 60-day negotiating period ended without an announced extension.

According to AP, Erdogan made the appeal in a telephone call late on Monday. Türkiye’s presidential communications office said he had stressed the importance of making maximum use of diplomacy amid the tensions.

On Tuesday, Trump said the United States had no planned talks with Iran. His statement came as he also insisted the Strait of Hormuz remained open and operating, despite limited traffic and a reported strike on a ship leaving the waterway.

What to watch next

The call does not establish a new mediation process. The next test is whether either government announces contact, terms or a pathway that can move the dispute beyond competing public positions.
