A projectile hit a ship as it sailed out of the Strait of Hormuz early on Tuesday, damaging its engine room and causing a crew casualty, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre.
The maritime monitoring body did not identify the vessel or its cargo, and it was unclear whether the crew member was killed or wounded. AP reported that the Omani Coast Guard was assisting other crew members while authorities investigated.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The incident came as commercial traffic through the waterway remained limited and Iran continued talks with Oman over a proposed transit arrangement.
What to watch next
The reporting priority is operational: identify the vessel only when independently confirmed, monitor safety notices and establish whether insurers, charterers and coastal authorities alter their guidance for transiting ships.
