Separatists in northern Mali have released 82 soldiers, according to the Malian armed forces and a spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front, AP reported.
Some of the soldiers had been held since attacks earlier this year. The release is a significant development in a region where armed groups and the military have faced recurring conflict and contested authority.
A pardon on the same day
On the same day, Mali's president pardoned a French embassy official who had been sentenced after being accused by the authorities of involvement in destabilisation. France has rejected the allegations, according to reporting by Le Monde.
Two developments, one day — and no public evidence of an exchange.
What is confirmed, and what is not
The release and the pardon have not been shown to be a negotiated exchange. The immediate questions are whether further releases follow and whether the pardon changes the tone of Mali-France relations.
