Pakistan’s military says intelligence-led operations this week killed 49 militants in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southwestern province of Balochistan.

The military said 12 people were killed in separate operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 37 in Balochistan, according to an AP report published on 21 August. It used state labels for armed groups operating in the two regions.

The announcement comes amid a wider rise in violence that Pakistani authorities attribute largely to the Pakistani Taliban and Baloch separatist groups. Pakistan has also made cross-border allegations involving Afghanistan and India; both countries deny them. Those competing claims, along with the reported fatalities and the conduct of the operations, remain unverified.
