Germany has opened a new drone-security technology centre at Cochstedt, designed to research, develop and test technologies for detecting and responding to drone-related risks.

In a 10 August government briefing, an Interior Ministry representative said the facility would be opened with the German Aerospace Center, known as DLR, and described it as a nationally unique site for real-world testing. Reuters reported the centre opened on 18 August as German officials linked the project to growing concern over hybrid threats and critical infrastructure.

The launch is a confirmed policy and capability development. It is not evidence that any named state or group was responsible for a particular drone incident. Open questions include the centre’s mandate, oversight, civil-liberties safeguards, procurement and testing standards, while incident attribution remains tied to evidence from investigators.
