KYIV - US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks in Kyiv on Sunday as Washington renewed efforts to find a diplomatic path through Russia's war against Ukraine. The visit followed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, but the talks produced no breakthrough.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held three rounds of discussions with the American envoys. The final meeting included national security advisers from Britain, France and Germany, reflecting the role European governments are expected to play in any future settlement or security arrangement.

Zelenskyy said the talks addressed Ukraine's air-defence needs, including Patriot systems, and a winter package for both air defence and energy infrastructure. Ukraine is seeking substantial support before colder weather places further pressure on the country's power network and civilian population.

The diplomatic challenge remains the same. Moscow and Kyiv continue to hold conflicting positions on territorial concessions, while both sides have sustained aerial attacks during the more than four-year full-scale war. Jared Kushner said the United States was working behind the scenes to create conditions for a possible agreement, while acknowledging that the problem was extremely difficult.

Zelenskyy said a follow-up meeting involving Ukraine, the United States and European governments had been agreed in principle, though no location had been announced. For now, the talks signal renewed contact rather than a negotiated settlement.
