Attacks reported across 12 regions
Russian attacks struck 12 regions of Ukraine overnight, killing at least two people and injuring 34, including five children, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday. Ukrainian officials reported damage to apartment buildings, energy facilities, a railway station, a Kyiv subway system and businesses.
Zelenskyy said 21 ballistic missiles were launched at Kyiv in three waves. One person was killed in the capital, while attacks in Kharkiv and the surrounding area left another person dead and at least 13 wounded, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said, according to the Associated Press. The tolls are official figures reported during an ongoing emergency response and could change.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences intercepted 808 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 630 directed toward Moscow, according to Russian officials cited by AP. That figure is a claim from the Russian government; AP’s report did not independently verify it. Moscow’s airports temporarily restricted air traffic.
Diplomacy remains uncertain
The latest attacks came as hopes of renewed negotiations remained tentative. Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed “in principle” to resume three-way talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States after meeting US envoy Steve Witkoff in St Petersburg, but no date was announced.
Zelenskyy said of the prospect of technical talks: “We’ll see what happens this time.”
Previous rounds this year produced prisoner exchanges but little reported progress toward ending the war. Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart on terms for a ceasefire, and the overnight strikes underline how military operations continue alongside intermittent diplomacy.
Ukraine is entering winter amid repeated attacks on energy infrastructure. Kyiv says the strikes threaten electricity and heating supplies as temperatures fall. Russia said its targets included facilities involved in making and storing drones and cruise missiles, as well as transport infrastructure. Those are Moscow’s stated target descriptions and do not independently establish the status of every site struck.
