More than 87,000 people have been forced to leave homes, campsites and holiday destinations as major wildfires spread across France and Spain, placing emergency services under intense pressure during another period of extreme European heat.

In south-western France, authorities ordered the evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula near Bordeaux. Some residents and visitors left by boat while others used the single road connecting the area to the mainland.

Fires in the Gironde region burned through large areas of forest and damaged homes and a campsite. Dozens of firefighters were injured as crews attempted to contain flames driven by high temperatures and strong winds.

Spain declared a national emergency as fires near Madrid and Ávila forced large-scale evacuations. Other major blazes were active across the country, including in Castilla-La Mancha, where the area affected was reported to be especially extensive.

A cross-border emergency

France and Spain requested assistance through European emergency mechanisms. Aircraft, helicopters and personnel from neighbouring countries were being deployed as domestic firefighting capacity came under strain.

The crisis has affected roads, care homes and tourism centres at the height of the summer season. Authorities warned that conditions could change rapidly, making evacuation orders and local travel restrictions essential for public safety.

Italy was also facing dangerous fire conditions, including in Sicily, where a firefighter was reported to have died. The simultaneous emergencies show how a prolonged period of heat can stretch national response systems across several countries at once.

Climate and fire risk

No single fire can be attributed to climate change without detailed analysis of local conditions and ignition sources. However, scientists have repeatedly warned that hotter, drier conditions increase the likelihood that fires will spread quickly and become harder to control.

Southern Europe has experienced longer fire seasons, repeated heatwaves and growing pressure on water supplies. Those trends are forcing governments to rethink prevention, evacuation planning and the size of the emergency resources held in reserve.

The immediate priority remains protecting people and containing the active fires. But the scale of the evacuations is also a warning about the economic and social consequences of increasingly severe fire seasons.

Tourism-dependent communities can lose an entire season in days. Forests and farmland may take years to recover. Insurance losses rise, public health is affected by smoke, and firefighters face repeated exposure to dangerous conditions.

For residents ordered to leave, the crisis is measured more simply: whether their homes, businesses and communities will still be standing when they are allowed to return.
