The European Commission has selected the EUROPA consortium to build an open-source frontier AI model covering all 24 official EU languages, a project designed to strengthen Europe's position in advanced AI.

The Commission announced the selection on 19 June as part of its Frontier AI Grand Challenge. The stated aim is to develop a European model with multilingual capacity and an open-source approach, placing language coverage and strategic autonomy at the centre of the project.

The announcement is significant because most leading AI systems are currently associated with US or Chinese labs and infrastructure. A credible European model could support public services, research, business adoption and language communities that are often underserved by English-dominant systems.
