Candidate held for several hours
Israeli forces detained and later released Brad Lander, a Democratic candidate for Congress in New York, while he was accompanying Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest in the occupied West Bank, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.
Lander was held for several hours. Dozens of other volunteers, including American rabbis, remained in custody at the time of AP’s report. The annual harvest has been marked by confrontations between Israeli settlers and Palestinian villagers seeking to gather their crops.
The Israeli military said participants had entered a military zone without prior coordination, according to AP. Lander disputed that explanation and said the detention was intended to discourage people from assisting Palestinian farmers. Those accounts differ, and the circumstances of the detention have not been independently resolved.
A harvest under growing pressure
Olive harvesting is a major seasonal livelihood for Palestinian families in the West Bank. This year’s harvest has coincided with a series of reported settler attacks, arrests and restrictions on access to farmland. The wider pattern has drawn attention from foreign officials and international observers.
The detention of a US candidate adds a diplomatic dimension, but it does not change the basic questions facing local farmers: whether they can reach their groves, complete the harvest and do so without violence or arbitrary detention. AP reported that Lander was not the first US politician detained in the West Bank this year.
The immediate incident remains contested. The military cited coordination requirements; Lander and other volunteers described the detention as unjustified. Independent reporting has confirmed that he was detained and released, while dozens of other volunteers were still being held when AP filed its account.
