Injury total rises as the storm moves offshore
Taiwan reported 527 people injured and one person dead after Typhoon Champi swept past the island, Reuters reported on Saturday, citing local authorities. An earlier Associated Press update put the number of injured at about 350, illustrating how the tally changed as emergency reports were collected.
The reported fatality was a man swept into the sea by waves near Liuqiu, according to the Reuters account. The Central Weather Administration said Champi was moving north-east of Taiwan and weakening, although strong winds and rough seas remained a hazard in coastal areas.
The storm disrupted transport and electricity. Reuters reported that more than 288,000 homes had lost power at some point, with most connections restored by the time of its report. Flights were cancelled as airlines and authorities responded to the weather.
Response continues after landfall risk eases
The movement of the storm away from Taiwan does not end the immediate risks. Flooding, dangerous surf, damaged infrastructure and further power interruptions can persist after the strongest winds pass. Authorities continued to assess injuries and damage, so figures may be updated.
Champi’s reported impacts came amid unusually severe conditions in the western Pacific. The reported maximum gusts and outage totals describe conditions recorded by local agencies and should not be read as uniform across the island.
The different injury counts in Saturday’s reports are best understood as updates at different points in the response, rather than evidence that either outlet independently verified a final toll. The latest figure cited by Reuters was 527 injured; Taiwan’s authorities may revise it as assessments continue.
