Paraguay’s Senate removed President Santiago Peña from office on Friday, and Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in to serve the remainder of the term, the Associated Press reported. The abrupt change followed the collapse of Ueno Bank, which regulators had seized three days earlier.
Peña was placed under house arrest pending an appearance before prosecutors on allegations including breach of trust and influence-peddling. He has denied wrongdoing. Lawmakers allege that political influence was used to direct public funds to Ueno while regulators overlooked risky lending; the allegations remain subject to investigation and legal process. Alliana is also under investigation in connection with the bank.
The crisis has had immediate consequences for customers: AP reported that Ueno account holders were unable to withdraw cash, access savings or use their cards after regulators intervened. The political transition does not itself resolve the question of how depositors will regain access to their money.
