Ministry reports second fatality
Kenya’s Health Ministry reported a second death linked to the Bundibugyo-virus outbreak on Friday, bringing the country’s confirmed case count to nine, the state-run Kenya News Agency reported. Seven patients were receiving care in two isolation facilities, according to the ministry update cited by the agency.
The patient who died was a 65-year-old woman described by officials as a close relative of the first patient. She developed symptoms while in quarantine on 13 October, was admitted for treatment that day and later died, the report said.
The ministry said the confirmed cases were connected to one cluster and that there was no evidence of wider community transmission. That assessment reflects the information available to Kenyan authorities at the time of the update; outbreak investigations and contact monitoring remain ongoing.
Different reporting cut-offs explain the death toll
The World Health Organization’s situation report dated 20 October listed nine cases and one death in Kenya. That report predates the ministry’s announcement of a second death on 23 October, so the two figures reflect different cut-off dates rather than contradictory accounts of the same update.
Bundibugyo virus is one of the viruses that can cause Ebola disease. Public-health teams are tracing contacts, monitoring people in quarantine and coordinating clinical care. A case count can change as suspected infections are tested and as surveillance identifies further contacts.
The latest available Kenyan update is serious, but it does not establish that the outbreak has spread beyond the known cluster. The key indicators to watch are whether new cases appear outside traced contacts, whether testing capacity keeps pace and whether authorities can maintain follow-up for people exposed to infection.
